Sean Bennett, 31, was sentenced on Friday, June 7, to five years in state prison for second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release. He must serve at least three-and-a-half years before he's eligible for parole.

An Atlantic City officer was flagged down by a man near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Pacific Avenue at around 1:31 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023. The victim said a man in an orange hoodie with a mask and carrying a bag pulled a gun on him at a traffic light near the Playground II store.

Police found Bennett leaving the store and "appeared to be trying to conceal something in a fenced area." An officer made eye contact with Bennett and he started quickly walking east on Pacific.

Bennett ignored police when he was told to put his arms in the air and shoved the officer. He tried to run away but police tackled him to the ground.

Bennett resisted arrest on the ground but officers were able to put handcuffs on him. Police searched him and found a 9mm Taurus G3 pistol, an opened knife, and two small ecstasy pills.

As part of his sentencing, Bennett was ordered to give up his gun.
